MDC and UOPBA invite landowners and managers to prescribed burn course Sept. 19 in Schell City

SCHELL CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Upper Osage Grasslands Prescribed Burn Association (UOPBA) invite landowners and land managers to a two-part course on using prescribed fire to manage land. The course includes an online education section that must be completed before the demonstration prescribed burn field day on Sept. 19. Space is limited and registration is required.

Participants can learn how to safely and effectively utilize prescribed fire to manage grasslands, fields, and other habitats. Topics will include burn equipment, burn line installation, safe weather parameters, ignition operations, and other techniques. MDC staff and members from UOPBA will be hosting the workshop and will have a burn trailer present with equipment and supplies for conducting prescribed burns. A light lunch and water will be provided.

Participants must first complete the online section of the two-part course. The Official Missouri Prescribed Burn Course must be completed at hunter-ed.com/prescribedburn before attending the demonstration field day. 

The online course has a $25 charge to a third-party host and can be completed in approximately 2–4 hours. Participants must bring their certificate of completion to the demonstration field day.

The second part of the course will be a field day with a demonstration burn (weather permitting) on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the MDC Schell-Osage Conservation Area at 4662 S. 2950 Road in Schell City. Participants should dress accordingly for the field day with leather boots, leather gloves, cotton pants, cotton long-sleeve shirt, and safety glasses. Other equipment and supplies will be provided.
